22. Abandonware Mar 7, 2003, 15:40 Morgan19

For whoever it was down below that commented Sierra should release their older titles, that does already exist, in a sense. There's a rather strong community of "Abandownware" enthusiasts online and it's not too hard to find sites related to the topic. I don't know whether or not most abandonware games are legal (eg how long ago they were released, if that even matters) but it most definitely exists. Personally I don't think 5 years ago is soon enough to label a game abandonware (I'd say a decade) but there are a ton like the King's Quest series that deserver to be played again. Others I can think of off the top of my head that are probably considered abandonware that I remember playing way back when (to give you an idea of what's out there): Loom, Zack McKracken, Might & Magic 1 (a FANTASTIC game), 688 Attack Sub, Burger Blaster, and the early Kryandia series.

Hope this didn't break any B'sN rules.

Agreed! I read about Devastation not more than a month ago in some random computer magazine and it looks incredible... It's a fresh change of pace for developers to actually focus working on the actual game rather than the PR (how long did we hear about U2, and look how "great" it turned out to be).

What with Devastation and Breed around the corner, things are looking up for FPSs.

I'm trying to remember when I picked up T1, it was a week after it was released and I'm pretty sure that was in 1998. Could be wrong, though.

3. Re: Release date? Feb 21, 2003, 18:00 Morgan19

I've found these dates on various sites, with no differentiation between US or UK dates:

- December 2002
- February 2003
- February 2003
- March 25, 2003
- March 25, 2003
- 3/25/03
- Spring 2003
- Q1 2003

So obviously there's some variance as to when people think it'll be released. (Especially "December 2002." :)) Amazon.com and a few other sites list March 25th, so I'd be inclinded to believe that date.

That feature's still in retail UT2k3, unless they took it out in the last patch (which I doubt). I believe the keys are N and M to invoke the red/blue trails that show you the way back to each base.

>>This expansion sounds cool, but when they make Morrowind 2<<

Are you familiar with TES series...? There won't be a M2. The progression has gone Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, and I believe Void (or a game having something to do with it, anyway) is the next in line.

The number don't lie. If so many people have bought and are buying it, enough to warrant this many expansions, there are certainly enough consumers who don't think it's an "awful franchise." I played it back when it first came out and decided it wasn't my cup of tea, so that's coming from a non-fan anyway.

But it's curious how, if something is prolific, you think it must be awful...

2. Popups Feb 5, 2003, 10:53 Morgan19

The popups comment reminded me... I personally used to use PopUp Killer (until it was discontinued, as I understand) but came across another one that I've been using for a few weeks called EndPopups (here: http://www.endpopups.com/). So far it's worked great (it even lets me view the Blue's logo info (a popup) without any tweaking... PopUp Killer would either kill all popups and not let me see ones like that, or allow everything. I've found that EndPopups won't kill popup windows you open yourself, so things like Blue's logo info gets to stay open while other nasties don't even come up.

In any case, if anyone's looking for a great popup utility, check it out. From what I've seen, it also looks like it only runs while the browser's open (IE only, I think) rathe than being a tray app.

8. Gametypes? Feb 1, 2003, 17:18 Morgan19

Maybe I'm just out of it or confusing the patch and bonus pack, but what happened to the new gametypes? I thought I'd heard mention of a Last Man Standing, something about everyone against one person, and "fight-against-U1-monsters" gametypes. I've installed both the patch and pack and can't find mention of the gametypes anywhere: no mutators, gametypes, nothing. Am I imagining this, or was this stuff not added?

(EDIT-) Ahhh, I think I know what happened... Apparently Epic is releasing a pack sometime soon as well that'll have gametypes, maps, etc.?

Try about 20 minutes, with download speeds fluctuating between 30 and 60 kb. Although the levels aren't particularly ground-breaking, they certainly are a study in how to make beautiful, believable environments. I really like the level that has a "Jurassic Park facility/overgrown foliage" feel to it... I have a feeling that mappers are going to make some great levels with these textures.

Although I have to wonder just how much stuff you've downloaded for UT2k3 if your UT folder is 6 gigs, and what's the problem with 120 mb's more, 6 gb is really small change when compared to the 120+ gb drives out there. It's still a somewhat valid argument though, especially if your computer's more than a few years old and you don't have a larger "modern" drive. (But then again, if you *do* have an old system you probably wouldn't be able to run UTk3 or U2 in the first place...)

As for your getting tired of having the CD in the drive, there's always the zillions of No-CD patches for just about any game you have. If you actually own the game, there's no one stopping you from backing up the appropriate .exe and applying the patch to get around the CD problem. Wham, problem solved, end of story.

My god, I can't believe you people are complaining about the size of something that you're getting from the devs for FREE. I shudder to think how whiny you all'd be if you had to buy the extra content! For those with broadband, no big deal. For those with modems, do like someone said below and download it overnight and get over it. It won't make a bit of a difference how long it took t download once you have it in your greedy little hands, have installed it, and are enjoying what they've put out for free for people who enjoy the game.
