(BTW, Overon you make good points but if you can't remeber Irrational/Vivendi's call for community input time and time again in press releases, conferences etc then theres no point in arguing with someone who has a selective memory).

True, they made "the call" for input; I remember as I was quite vocal with my own opinions. Despite that, almost NONE of the feedback received was either utilized or built upon. Plenty of the criticism is absolutely justified... The pretense of "listening" was made but never actualized.

I still play T1 Renegades just about every week. It's the only game that's stayed on my harddrive since I first bought it in 1998. So chalk another player up. T1 was the game that got me switched to a mouse/keyboard scheme... If I remember correctly, you couldn't just use a keyboard a-la Quake 1/2. Ahh, memories.

Agreed! I'm still laying in stores for the long wait on the demo train, so the more real hands-on info we can get about this one, the better!

The sights, sounds, maps, weapons of MP looks EXACTLY the same. The same tick tick sound when you hit someone, the same death noises, the same weapons, everything! Please someone tell me otherwise!

Maps are for the most part verbatim Q3, tick sound is different, weapons are either identical or similar, and player movement/physics are very much Q3-like as well. Any preview of Q4 in the past six months will tell you the same thing though, so I'm not sure why this is such a surprise: they liked what Q3 was, so they kept the formula.

The singleplayer looks exactly like Doom 3. In fact, the Strogg and levels look straight outta Doom 3! Again, someone tell me otherwise!

Looks like it, yes, but the "feel" is different. I can't exactly put my finger on it but it's not as slow, the objective-based gameplay (blow up the big gun, find your commanding officer, etc.) makes a lot more sense than DOOM3 ever did. It feels livlier and goes at a much brisker (?) pace.

(re-using a retared story premise and color pallette doesnt thrill me very much..... neither does the D3 engine


You know, from the hour I was able to toy with it, I agree with your run-of-the-mill shooter statement, but at the same time I think that's a great thing. I've been so oversaturated with thinker/sneaker/squad games that's a very welcome change of pace to have one that you can hop into and a) instantly know what you're doing and b) not have to worry about mapping alt fires, leaning, voice commands, or anything else. Yes, it's simple, but I'm starting to think maybe that's a good thing right now.

Dunno, I just get the feeling that I'll be playing MP on this one for a long time after the SP portion's over. I have fond memories of Q2 Threewave and DM as well as various Q3 mods (Weapons Factory, Team Fortress, Excessive, and even Team Arena) and from what it seems like Q4 is a great blend of Q2 and Q3.

I'm not just a fanboy either, as I've put in my fair share of time with the Tribes, Half-Life, and UT series as well. This is all very much an objective review of what I've seen so far. (I really do wish there were more MP maps though, but I'm sure that'll be "fixed" by the general public soon enough...)

Maybe it's just my stinky memory, but wasn't there a pool of water with a railgun in a room at the bottom of Q2's Edge? I think that's missing now. A couple other small changes, but all in all it seems pretty close to the original, speed and all.

And thus why I never preorder. I walked into my local EBX this morning and picked up the regular CD-ROM version and spent my lunch break giving it a whirl.

SP so far seems, understandably and oddly all at the same time, a mix of DOOM3 and Quake 2. I've jumped out of my seat once already from a unexpectedly monster breaking through a wall. So far it's been very dark (a-la D3) but having the weapon-able flashlight is making all the difference... it's not a chore.

I ran around a few of the MP maps on my own and a few things hit me:

1) The maps all seem to be Q3 remakes with one Q2 (The Edge) thrown in. Maybe I just haven't seen it yet, but my impression is that there aren't any original maps.

2) It plays exactly like Q3 deathmatch: the loading icons are the same, the weapons are very similar, even the ammo icons are the same. Whether this is a good or bad thing remains to be seen. I know they were sticking to the "if it's not broken..." mantra, but it seems they took it a lot more literally than I would've expected.

3) Only nine maps?? I sincerely hope there's some extra content or the community starts mapping REAL soon.

All in all, I'm really enjoying it so far. Time will tell if it's worth $49, but I'm glad the wait's over.

Did you guys just see the headline and not bother reading the story at all?

The story makes it clear that contracts like this are often signed before definitive plans for sequels are sealed, and that in this case there are no plans for another DOOM movie at this point.
