I don't know why all game developers seem to think everyone likes rock music

Actually I think it's pretty rare these days. id used it because they love alternative\industrial music or whatever and obviously they felt it fitted the gameplay of Quake 2 and Quake 3. For me, although I've always been a fan of many styles of alternative music, that sort of thing doesn't really work for a game because it doesn't help to create an atmosphere (though I guess for Q3, since there was no atmosphere, they just figured a few less than average heavy tracks would suit the 'mood' well enough).

Still, its no better or worse than if a developer decides to used 'techno' music (or any other popular style) to back their game - that's equally sure to ruin any mood the game might have had (with the odd exception of the Sytem Shock 2 soundtrck, which despite being a style of music a generally don't like, manages to be both listenable and also extremely atmospheric at times).

Nevertheless, if you'd given the Quake 1 soundtrack a chance you'd have realised that rock music it most certainly is NOT, you could hardly be further from the truth, and that is the soundtrack we're talking about

Too late for that I'm afraid, I think this potentially very interesting topic is dead thanks to the prepubescent morons

In fact it's quite clear that most of these idiots aren't actually old enough to be playing these sorts of games, which leads me to doubt the usefulness of the ratings sytem and wonder whether a licensing system for human reproduction isn't such a bad idea, since their parents clearly aren't up to the job...

The Quake1 soundtrack is one of my favorites

Glad to hear I'm not alone
Not only did it work perfectly with the game, creating an atmosphere other games have a hard time beating, but it also works in its own right as a piece of 'music' just to listen to. That is if you like ambient soundscapes that are designed to create a mood...think Berio, Diamanda Galas, even the B side of Bowie's 'Low' for instance (just trying to think of examples of that kind of thing that people might know ;)). It works on its own, it's good to listen to.

7. Re: quake sound effects May 30, 2002, 14:16 Dr.Haggard

Eh? Oh come on, the Quake sound effects and soundtrack were IMHO far better and more atmospheric than practically any other game to date. The sounds for things like doors and buttons, some of the monsters, weapons, pickups etc...almost everything, were just way beyond anything that had been done before then.

The sound effects fitted (you could say created) the eerie mood better than most games since. They blew me away, and coupled with Trents wonderfully creepy ambient soundtrack (which IMO is still one of the best soundtracks ever made for a game) it all made the single player game a far more disturbing and immersive experience than it otherwise would have been.

How many times do we have to go over this? Every single time there's an id related post on Blue's?!
Of course gameplay takes precedence over graphics, of course every Looking Glass game ever made is better than a hundred Quake 3's...we know all that, but I'm trusting id (having read what they have to say on the matter) to make a great single player game, and judging by the (miniscule) evidence we've seen so far, they've made a truly jaw dropping engine and are definitely on the right track to making a seriously atmospheric sci-fi horror FPS.

I think we know it's not going to be another "enter level - shoot everything - get blue/red/yellow key - find door - leave level" game, things have moved on a lot from that and id are not about to shoot themselves in the foot by taking several steps backwards now that the FPS genre has evolved so much. Trust them

hype, hype, hype, hype, hype, hype, hype...

...some say the end is near, some say we'll see armageddon soon, certainly hope we will...

Sorry you just reminded me of something.

Who cares what you call it anyway, last week we got our first proper look at DOOM III and it looks amazing. The annoying thing is that now having got us excited it's all going to go quiet again now for a long time

Yes. I was lucky to get it while it was up, but I'm sure id will release the presentation soon as an mpeg or something anyway. It really is amazing even in this shaky cam footage (which isn't actually very shaky at all, but the quality isn't particularly good).

why call it Doom, w-h-e-n- i-t i-s-n-t- d-o-o-m-?

Doom III is a retelling of the original Doom story. Why call it Doom? Well, maybe because it's the same setting, the same monsters, the same themes, the same story (albeit presumably rewritten and integrated into the game a lot more) the same scary sci-fi horror atmosphere...

Look, I know what you're saying about the hordes of enemies, it was fun and it was a part of what made Doom great, but IMO it just wouldn't work these days, even disregarding the limitiations of the engine (or rather the limitations of the hardware it will run on). Things have moved on. Just trust them, it will be Doom, and I'm sure it will capture that scary sci-fi atmosphere we all remember so fondly, and they'll do it without hordes of bloody enemies

I find it shocking that so many ppl are saying that the gameplay will suck when id are telling us at every opportunity that they are concentrating on making a truly immersive SP game this time around.

Now that they're seriously committed to making an atmospheric, story-driven single player FPS above all else I can't think of anyone more capable of pulling it off. Forget what's gone before, our expectations for single player FPS's have changed a lot over the last few years, and we've yet to see what id can do in this 'new age' of single player shooters - after all their only output in the years since christmas '97 has been multiplayer focussed.

I expect they're going to blow us all away with the most immersive and scary first person game we've seen in years. They're taking their time, this isn't just about the technology.

Copy Valve? So Valve are the only people who've made a game with a story until now?
Ok so Valve brought decent story telling, progression, suspense, narrative etc to the FPS genre (or at least made a better job of it than previous attempts), and since then everyone has criticised other FPS developers for not doing the same thing because since HL we expect more atmosphere and storytelling in this traditionally unintelligent genre, and now we're seeing more of that sort of thing you criticise them for copying Valve!

I always dreamed of a decent horror-shooter which "makes me skin crawl"

Flo, you really need to play System Shock 2
(ok strictly speaking it's not a 'shooter'...no, it's far more than just that)

It's nice to hear them reiterate that they're concentrating on making a really atmospheric and immersive single player game...some multiplayer will be nice for a little extra longevity, but SP is what I really play games for.

It sounds like they're capturing the kind of pant-filling, adrenaline pumping sci-fi horror atmosphere that only the wonderful System Shock games have done before (and which I'm hoping Kreed might manage to do too).
Looking forward to this a lot, even more since reading this article.

TREES ARE NOT SWINGING?!?

Well if you look at how the snow is falling I'd say there's not a lot of wind (though you might expect the very tips to be swaying slightly...or is this just pointless nit-picking?)

Still, personally I'm not impressed really. The previous waterfall demo was a lot more impressive as someone else has said. Maybe my indifference is partly because this really doesn't look like a place I want to 'go' so it doesn't excite me...and NOLF2 isn't a game I particularly want to play either
Having said that this engine really isn't likely to make any jaws drop.

8. Re: Kreed May 9, 2002, 06:55 Dr.Haggard

Kreed just keeps looking better every time I see new shots, and despite obviously having only preliminary AI and some clipping problems etc the movies of the game so far have looked great.
Given the way it's looking, if they get the gameplay right, and the pacing and music etc, Kreed could be a really atmospheric sci-fi horror.

Although it'll probably be a far simpler, pretty straightforward FPS style game, atmosphere-wise Kreed could be reminiscent of the System Shock games...but maybe I'm hoping for too much

Install programs are rarely straightforward - in fact they can be pretty complex - but to the user they appear very simple (which is the whole point). Perhaps because of that it's often an overlooked part of software development, or an afterthought, and often they have to be knocked together pretty quickly by some poor programmer with people looking over his\her shoulder expecting it to only take five minutes.
Some people work full time as install programmers, that's how complex they can be.

the best realtime shadow in gaming history

Obviously you've never played Severance (Blade of Darkness in the US)! Sorry, I just had to comment because it bugs me when ppl overlook that incredible game - they did so many things so much better than anyone else has done yet, including jaw-droppingly realistic lighting and real time shadows.
