Damn, that's too bad. Sounds like a first rate hack job... er, port. I was hoping this game would reasonably support FPS mouse and KB controls. Cool that it comes on DVD-only.
As for the ATI and DX9... funny, I just installed a game a few weeks ago that required DX9, SWG (beta) anyone? Also, in playing them both, I'm thinking Planetside could be the same engine (or a close relative anyway). Sure, most cards can emulate DX 9 through software...
Ah well... anyone seen a playable demo for MGS2-PC??

"if it's 6 cd's it means not so many warez monkeys will be eager to download it"
Heh, warez monkey's don't care how long free downloads take.
I on the other hand, as a paying customer, would be frustrated at having to install -- not to mention, pay a few more dollars for -- 6 CDs when perfectly good DVD technology has existed for years.
It's too bad offering titles in separate media formats (CD and DVD) poses nearly as much of a dilemma for publishers as does releasing DVD only.

…Pretends to fight $pam.
At first, I was thinking they had actually done a good thing in limiting Hotmail accounts to 100 messages sent per day. However, in reading the article, "It does not apply to MSN 8 subscribers or those who purchase extra storage on Hotmail"... so, basically anyone who wants to pay $5-10/month can continue to spam to their hearts content through Hotmail/MSN.
Good job MS!! Might as well pinch some spammers into paying a few bucks to $pam.

Other good reasons to have a DVD-ROM |
Mar 23, 2003, 00:40 |
BlueF |

Dunno, it seems odd NOT to have a DVD drive in your PC these days, ESPECIALLY if you’re a gamer who’s built your own system (no offense intended :)).
Hell, the wholesale/internet price of a good DVD-ROM drive has been a whopping $10-15 more than a good CD-ROM drive for years. I've had a DVD-ROM drive in my system since 2x DVD-ROM drives (course, they weren't as inexpensive back then, but prices quickly fell as newer gen DVD drives came out). Anyway, I burn from disc to disc and copy CDs often enough that having a second drive is nice to have. Then, being able to watch/rip DVD-movies is a rather inexpensive bonus.
In all fairness, I can see how some folks wouldn’t use the second drive. Even so, I'm still hopeful that more games and programs start coming on DVD. As I said, this is progress, plain and simple. Not much about "forced upgrade" that I’m sure we're prolly all weary of. I'd call it convenience as well as progress... Office and Windows on a single disc, anyone?. Heh. I look forward to reading that Dell is dropping 650MB CD-ROM drives from their systems! : P

Damn. I think the patch made it worse for me also. Didn't seem to run so poorly last night. But now, with the patch... Dunno, maybe there's just more lag this morning. All the damn people reading CNN war coverage.
Ah well. I'm glad to have played the demo and seen what could be a cool game. Tho, I do wish it had been tested more before release or even labeled more accurately as a BETA demo. As is, quite a bit of work to go. I'll have to check this one out again at a later build.

Games on DVD = sweet! |

Nice! This is good progress. The CD-ROM is at least 10 years old, 650MB media just can’t cut it for ever. Hell, I wouldn't even be surprised if we saw the next generation of optical-removable media (consumer level) released in the next few years.
I know this will be an issue for some gamers, but there's no better way to increase industry support. And, come on, DVD-ROM drives are considerably inexpensive these days. I see many going for as low as $15 on eBay. Of course, this is not to mention, I'm sure this is also about the publisher saving money. I'm betting its less expensive to manufacture one DVD these days than multiple CDs.
In the long run, this is a good move for not only publishers, but developers and gamers alike. Sure, some might take issue with the abundance of cut scenes in Solid Substance, but many games _will_ benefit from the increased space garnered through greater DVD-ROM market share.
Funny, this brings to mind another DVD-ROM game… Enter the Matrix. I was reading a recent article about how Shiny was facing the dilemma of cramming their game into 5GB. Made me wonder how they will have to gimp the GameCube version and it’s proprietary 1GBG-CD?! I’m sure we’ll all want them to cut out as much crappy bullet-time cinematics as possible, eh? They’re filming this game in conjunction with the 2nd and 3rd Matrix films, btw.

I'm in agreement with Aguita. I'm not into running around looking for shops. More to the point, and as the interview example points outs, I'm not into standing around town hollering that I want to buy equipment. While the "messageboard, 24-7 convenience-mart” approach to player crafting ecomony can certainly diminish the emersion factor of a MMORG, I'd much prefer spending time running around (exploring) the game world outside of towns and cities.
Too each their own…

Good for them. I'm all for dev's taking their time and polishing their games as much as possible. Of course, DNF not withstanding.
I do understand how folks can get their hopes up and look forward to playing a game at a certain release date. But, to get upset because a game is delayed, hopefully to make it better, I don't understand this.

Macromedia has _always_ irked me! |

Why leave it up to a new site, which just so happenes to breaks most browsers, to be irked by Macromedia?
Never mind their horrible software install process, which, at least for the last time I broke down and installed shockwave (to play some goofy game), ends up closing ALL your other windows, without so much as a warning. Never mind the incredible power and function of flash, when used by the forces of good... in things such as slick animations and integrated interfaces for well designed sites. The pain of flash used in epilepsy-inducing ads is perhaps the worst offense of all, for which I can't much see to forgive macromedia.
Bastards!
Oh well, long as my flash killer works (flashswitch.com).

I wonder... How many games could Vivendi ship, boxes lined with $100 bills, before they hit $25 billion?!

Re: Nvidia, ATI rev graphics engines. |

Damn would I be selling nVidia stock if I owned any right about now!!
It's kinda frightening.
First, 3dfx goes under, their "products" prove malformed, they're unable to keep pace. Now, we have nVidia, who's using technology (and even some engineers) from the company they helped crush (3dfx). Almost prophetically, nVidia has named their latest product, a leaf blower from what I’ve heard, after that same company.
Strange!
I remember thinking 3dfx was done when I saw their 4 GPU, full length, external power source requiring monster. Poorly conceived and/or implemented engineering. At best, horribly rushed.
Good luck nVidia!
Much as I detest ATI for cheating on their drivers a while back -- giving high FPS, at the cost of image quality, in Quake 3 -- I’ll be sticking with their otherwise proven hardware for another generation or two.

OMG, the laaag... don't even get me started on the treadmill. I hope they come up with some way to make leveling unnecesary or passibly entertaining for those who don't enjoy mindless leveling.
Other than those stardard MMORG woes, Shadowband seems like it could be cool.

I'm agreement with Gimpzor... requiring a new version download (+0.01) to watch newly released movie clips is indeed lame!
It's not as if I don't already have Divx 5.02 installed.
Now that I've downloaded the updated DivX, let's see how the movie looks.

Luckily, I have two nice gaming PCs on my desk right now. Unfortunately, I’ve still yet to make this work. I'll certainly post if I am successful. Here's hoping!
On a side note, I recall, Rockstar: "Adding multi-player to GTA3 wouldn't add significant to the game at this time." All I have to say to that is.... BAAAAAAH!! Lying PR-spin bastards. I hope they hurry up and release the next version, rumored to be massively online. : P

Intesting perspective |

BlueF |

Hmm, that's an intesting perspective. After reading the news post, especially the lines:
Maybe not the best – but certainly not the worst.
I was just wondering to myself what the big deal was over taking a bit longer than expected or not affecting a daily presence on a website... now I better understand. Too bad.
I'd just as soon have little hype, minimal interview and public interaction with game devs (sans beta testers) and let them get the job done, so to speak. I don't see any problem with pushing release (or beta test) dates back, nor does not having constant contact seem important in any way.
Ah well, I suppose DNF could be another prime example. That is, only time will tell whether our hopes, and for those who could muster a modicum of patience, will be justified.

How odd, I seem to recall someone saying there would be no Unreal II demo. That's what I get for beleiving such a random, far-fetched statment. Shouldn't have beleived any game of such high expectation, not to mentino moderate hype, will ever go without a demo. Heh. That whould be a poor choice of suicides.
Ah well, I've already "tried" the game... Sigh.
