News Comments > Loot Drop Drops Kickstarter
4. Re: Loot Drop Drops Kickstarter Oct 22, 2012, 10:53 John

I think they just didn't start off right. It was first called "An Old-school RPG" but then they changed to "SHAKER - Old-school RPG". Then they showed what looked to be a fantasy type image for the game but their updates showed a sci-fi character. I think an old-school sci-fi RPG would be cool but they need to be more clear about it.

I also didn't like how in the pitch video they said they would do 'two' completely different RPGs if they got enough money.. I think they should stick with one and make the one better if they get additional funding.

The track record is pretty good IMO. Sure they had a couple games that weren't the greatest but many others were. I enjoyed Planescape: Torment and the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale games and this is what PE will mostly resemble.

Yes, pessimism means you see the worst instead of the good they have done.

My major concern is that PE will end up like TOEE and other titles that the collective staff of Obsidian have had a hand in. Dumped on the market with deep bugs and very little support.
Well my pledge tier includes beta access to the game so I'll test it out and let Obsidian know of any bugs I may find. There are too many pessimistic folks around here..

It is the nature of the "game". It takes money to make money.
Or just a Kickstarter to make money!

I don't see a problem with them already thinking about future games in the series. If the first PE game is going to be a small part of a much larger world then it's good that they design it that way from the beginning so it can be tied in better later on.

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering too. They're never clear about how it will look and they show images of both in the video too.

I believe the Double Fine Adventure will be the first high-profile project to start from nothing, get funding via KS, and then go from there. In fact, their original target ship date was October (i.e. this very month), but that was for their initial goal of $400k. I understand it will take a while longer to spend those extra millions.
Yeah, I think they're shooting for May of next year now. I'm glad they're taking the time to add more content to the game though.

It's not really about quality, necessarily, but rather allowing more freedom in terms of what TYPE of game you are making. This kind of title would simply not get released from mainstream publishers, at any level of quality.
Exactly! I think quality can be better too without having publishers pressuring the devs to meet a certain date or change parts of the game negatively.

Edit: Actually, going by the standard progression of every 2.5k extra backers, that should be 15 mega dungeon levels... Because 14 was at 75k. Not sure if that was just a typo/mistake on their part, or if they're not counting all those PayPal people, or what.
That's what I was thinking too! Since the KS backer total was about 74k and the Paypal backers pushed that over 77.5k, that should have added 2 more levels. It was level 13 when KS ended. I'm sure someone will correct them though.

Yeah, that would have been a good addon. I would have liked a cloth banner of the Endless Dungeon image too.

Yeah, they must have been partying hard last night! They should send out an update soon though with the current total and saying thanks again to all backers.

I don't understand why they don't factor in the paypal numbers.

But, I also don't understand why people are donating via paypal instead of just going through the appropriate route of kickstarter and getting rewards from it.
They do include the Paypal numbers in the total, it just doesn't show on Kickstarter.

And you can donate via Paypal and still receive the same rewards as those on KS. Check out their page and you'll see the tiers that are available.

...falling short of their final $4 million stretch goal...

Yeah, the total on their KS page fell short of $4 million but adding in the Paypal backers it should be over $4.1 mil. They seem to still be taking Paypal backers too for those who have been under a rock and missed the KS campaign.

13's still a nice number. If they could somehow play off the idea of how, in RL (w/o breaking the 4th wall), we don't go to the 13th floor, due to some giant horrible, adventurer eating boss down there, so much the better.

Sounds good to me!

Does anyone know what the final number of levels is for The Endless Paths?

There were the original three, two for the 40k+ Likes on FB...
There are currently 13 levels I believe including the one additional from FB likes. They only got about 24k Likes on their FB page. The 40k+ Likes on the KS page were only for the PE KS page and not Obsidian which I don't think counted.

I am sure there were enough Paypal backers to increase the number to at least 14 though because only 1014 more were needed for the next level.
