What I find interesting is that the family wants to sue the doctors for taking her off life support when the parents were quoted a couple of days ago stating that the decision to terminate her life is up to the doctors.
When this sort of thing happens, I usually wonder about lawyers coming in trying to convince the parents that they have a strong case... after all, it is a high profile case and even though the parents have no money to pay the lawyers the sympathetic public will donate money to a fund that could be used to pay the lawyers off.. a lot of lawyers (not all) are pretty darn entrepreneurial -- I guess you can't blame them though, they are just trying to make a buck.
The other thing that interests me is this public perception of wanting to keep brain dead people on a ventilator. If you are brain dead you are dead (ie. brain death = death). There is no sense in having the breathing machine hooked up to a corpse. Yet a lot of familys don't want to turn off the machine since, understandably, they are thinking emotionally and lose a lot of rationality over the issue. So, if a doctor wants to terminate life support because the patient is dead then it is the right thing to do, since what are you keeping alive if the patient is already dead? (God! That sounds so obviously intuitive!)
The next thing that I find very honorable is the chief surgeon who "takes full responsibility" for this mistake, when it wasn't even his fault! The hospital's internal checks failed and the lab that tests and double tests the antibodies also failed, yet he is the one who is taking the blame! If this were a political mess or a military situation, I can assure you that no Senator/President/high ranking officer would come foward to take blame over something that he did not directly do... they would look for a scapegoat to blame... but this surgeon is basically ruining his career more so that it already is by taking 100% of the blame when the fault was nowhere near 100% his.. honorable in my opinion...

I have known about Ali G for a couple of years now.. and I live in Canada... some friends told me about him... you can easily download his clips from Kazaa... and he is also the limo driver in Madonna's "Music" video...
he says to 2 American chicks in the back of the limo:
"Have you ever been to London? Do you want to see the real Big Ben? Aiiiiiight!"

quote: " I would assume from a primitive knowledge of physics that wearing a mask wouldn't help - if the g-force is pushing the blood to the back of your head, or pushing it down to the bottom, the pumping of the heart simply wouldn't be enough to push blood to your eyeballs. A face-mask presumably wouldn't help a great deal. "
I have never been in one of these Gforce aerospace labs.. but I don't think there is any deformation of the helmet when pilots go under extreme gforces, is there?

cool.. what kind of doctor are you?
weird science link: "Blackout, preceded by grayout, is the point at which g force keeps blood from getting into the eyeballs."
since I my knowledge of aerospace medicine is limited... why not just wear a mask the prevent direct pressure to the face?? any pilots here? anyone?

medical errors |

being a doctor, I can profess the errors in the HEALTH CARE profession, not just the medical profession.. Do you know what the #2 killer is in the US? Heart Disease is #1, Cancer is #3 (this is for all comers) and medical mistakes are #2. Scarey isn't it?
The US government is fighting with the unions to make doctors work less hours (if you worked 120+ hours a week you would make errors too) as well as taking other measures to prevent mistakes (paperless systems to prevent misinterpretation of handwriting, etc). But all this costs money.. money which neither the CAN or US health care systems have.
It is important to realize that it isn't just the doctors who are making mistakes, it is the entire health care organization as a whole... including the patients! For instance... a doctor writes an order, either the RN or pharmacist misinterprets the writing (either the writing is unreadable or the individual health care provider simply misread it) and the wrong drug or wrong dose is given. I have witnessed some errors myself.. the most memorable is the doctor writing a does for Lasix 80mg IV and the nurse giving KCL 80mEq IV push... that is equivalent to a lethal injection and the patient arrested on the scene... as unfortunate as it sounds, health care is run by humans, and humans make mistakes... so these things are inevitable.. it is our task as the general public to try to minimize these mistakes.
the interesting thing is the mortality and morbidity of driving on the highway is significantly higher than entering a hospital... yet people take their chances every day...

Silent Sorrow, "some games go gold and they're said to be shipping within two weeks and others go gold and it takes a month. "
It is called supply chain management. And many companies have different leads times for their products, that is what makes them better or worse than their competitors. Each company in every industry strives to minimize their product cycle by eliminating inefficiencies in their supply chain. However, this costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time to master.
Hence, some companies deliver products sooner than others. (compare: Dell's 'pull' supply chain vs. Gateway's 'push system')

woot!
I got post 100! I think I get a candy for that (or maybe a swift kick in the ass)
As for Blue's messaging system, it stinks... a lot of the Gomers out there can change their name to other usernames and "imitate" other users... rather silly, you would think each user would have a unique username to prevent this silliness..

you recall incorrectly, they did and they apologized for this.
"And it's not like anyone in the US even knows who the hell the Sikhs ARE."

Satyric0n,
you silly guy, I was j0king about the ridiculous spelling! I was acutally going to use the word "ghey" to describe DOA Xtreme Volleyball and BMX Extreme, buth then I realized that I would be discriminating against gay people, so I came up with redikulous.
instead of looking up words at dictionary.com, spend your time saving the video game industry by thinking up some original game ideas...
..what would be really cool is a game that involved the current world crisis (UN/US/Iraq/EU etc).
I remember playing a horribly addictive game for my C64 that allowed you to negotiate various war strategies across the globe and there were caricatures of prominent political figures (Thatcher, Regan, Gorbie, Ghandi etc)... you could launch nukes at each other, etc and you win when your nation DOMINATES THE GLOBE.
something like that but with a more realistic factor would kickass... a la Tom Clancy-ish... not FPS though... just a topdown view of the planet (satellite-esque)... conspiracy, terrorism, politics, warmongering... it would be cool....

you mean it isn't spelled r-e-d-i-k-u-l-o-u-s?
damn, and I bought shares in dictionary.com all for nothing!
edit: you know, if someone had spare time out there and the interest and the motivation... he/she should come up with a website that allows people to discuss ORIGINAL video game ideas... as my sig says.. we need something new, something revolutionary in the gaming world... the Doom FPS rip-offs are getting old 12 years after the fact.. mmorpgs are over done, RTS are carbon copies of one another... .. I was hoping that mixing of FPS with RTS would have yielded something fresh, but not as of yet...
.. a group of people should brainstorm some new gaming ideas... some type of new genre that promises new gameplay... no matter how whacked out it may seem... we went from 2d side scrollers in the 80s to FPS in the 90s... what's next? ideas?

whether you are shooting homosexuals or whites or blacks or fat people, it is all redikulous.
DOA volleyball's skimpy bikini-clad women = redikulous that BMX xtreme nekkid chick game = redikulous Hitman 2 killing Sikhs = redikulous
why don't gaming companies come up with ORIGINAL games with GREAT GAMEPLAY instead of trying to profit on games that will headline the newspapers in order to get cheap advertising?
