News Comments > New Day of Defeat: Source Map
27. Re: No subject Dec 1, 2005, 17:54 BicycleRepairMan

It need not and should not be done by only one person if the map is drafted in advance.

Have you ever made a map?? drafted in advance? wtf? A map needs to be done basically by one person*, for so many reasons.. design, sizing, consistency, compiling, testing (release candidates needs to be compiled) and not least, game balance. whether you are pro or not, a map is a path you make as you walk it, its not done till its done.. Sure its smart and useful to have a draft/sketch but just adding more people is useless..

I liked the novel comparison, like say you have a story for a book, and say "these people end up dead, this is the killer, and this is how the detective solves it", if you had one writer on each chapter, the book would still end up a mess, full of inconsistencies..

*one can make textures as well, but this doesnt really speed the progress of the map itself, since textures often relay on a finished design of the map itself..

just out of curiosity, as I havent played it myself, how many maps are there in BF2, and how many are actually played?

In the old dod, there where plenty of maps, yet MANY servers where anzio or avalanche 24/7.

Quality over quantity. valve could probably have released over a hundred half-assed maps by now if they wanted to. what would be the point?

but it felt like it was having some trouble fitting into the engine and, excluding graphics, it felt quite a few steps behind DoD

Current version is 3.3, and it has a new movement system, feels more slick now than ever, but yes, they've done lots of hacking just to make it fit into UT, and theyve gone beyond what your'e supposed to be able to mod in the engine, now that they have the full engine, all that wont be a problem anymore..

And yes, compared to DOD:source the graphics arent quite there, but IMHO , RO actually has better looking weapon models etc, and the new levels looks better than what you can expect on the UT engine..

But ofcourse, Source is a newer engine, and HDR looks awesome..

EDIT , i mis-read your post, but IMO I think its ahead of DOD in most departments.. but it takes some getting used to the different gameplay.. There are also some levels that arent that good, or atleast have a very steep learning curve, so new players end up just walking for too long only to get shot from some hidden sniper, or blown up by the nades that are very hard to see coming.. hopefully RO:O will make it easier to get into the game, because once you do, the gameplay is awesome..

UT looks pretty sometimes, but i dont like the feal of the engine, so much effort on UT engine is waste of time if u ask me.Makes a good DM game but add to much to it and wow does it suck.

Some of the games released on the Unreal-engine 2.5, My point is, its not the UT "deathmatch-engine" they are using, basically RO:O could be VERY different from UT, just like most of the above mentioned games..

Lets see, pay for R.O? uuuum no......What happened to all the free mods everyone was gonna make with the source code that was gona be soo user and mod friendly and easy to use that we should be swamped with source mods? All im seeing is a purchase to play half done, buggy, awfull multiplayer experience so far with source not to mention they gakked everything over 32 players. R.O. my thoughts is keep it free or it will die. Garranteed.

what Dagok said, without all the hatin'

Want source mods? well try Hidden:Source , for a more total conversion ,these things take time, so nothing big is out yet, but check out Insurgency, from some of the people behind Red Orchestra , this mod seems to be awesome.

Anyone want to buy a slightly used CD version of a console game ported to the PC called "Quake 4"?

You might wanna take a course in selling stuff

And I was a quake fan...

Sadly, Ray, I have to agree on almost all of you points there.. I didnt even understand that that "thing" was the nailgun .. where the hell are the weapon animations??? all of the guns look THE SAME! I mean, og there are some different colors etc, but the look basically like random-generated models or something.. so DULL

I was actually prepared to get this once I got some cash.. but now after the demo.. no way.. I felt like I was playing the unreal II demo, except it was worse, much worse.

And when I saw the first "exploding" barrel, that just did it for me. 2005, millions worth of tech at your disposal, rights to the Quake name, 30 employees, 2 years of development and you cant make a fucking exploding barrel look cool? Donald Trump wants to talk.

Then I checked out multiplayer. I somehow feel like playing one of those good looking flash games or that 60kb game that uses memory to generate everything..

Except maybe the shotty, but sadly, that animation sucks, and the sound was replaced with a weak fart.

Allthough I am sad the Quake franchise has been disgraced with this..thing, I'll have to look at the bright side: It will be really easy to choose F.E.A.R

RO was a great addition to the Unreal family, the problem is the AI, so hopefully they get some help in that department.

AI and bots had a very low (read: none) priority in the RO betas, they focused on getting the MP and weapon ballistics etc all correct before even thinking about it, in the latest couple of releases they got the bots somewhat working, but they are no real opponents yet.

Tripwire has some amazing programmers, and with full access to the code, I cant wait to see what theyll pull off.

To all the Steam-haters: ok, there may be some cons to this thing (privacy etc.), but to developers, specially small ones like Tripwire, it must be a dream come true; you get exposure to millions of gamers in an instant, (Your game end up just a click away to millions..) you dont have retail costs (boxing , shipping, marketing etc) and AFAIK, they get full creative freedom, and no pressing deadlines etc.. And all that means that we get to see more, and better games from small devs all around. That, to me, is exciting about steam.

RO is one of those niche games, going for alot of immersion/realism (makes COD, DOD and BF seem extremely arcade'ish) there is no crosshairs, bullets actually drop over distance, MG42 has proper ROF etc etc. Seeing as its also in the much used WW2 setting, many publishers would be sceptical to put it on the shelves next to the big EA titles, so I definatly think Steam will help this game.

Steams biggest downer IMO is that it only runs on windows..

How often do you see a really good TC with original (new) assets the last several years?

Unfortunatly, not that often.. One mod I do have hopes for these days is Insurgency for HL2, check out the screenshot on the front page..

Ofcourse, anyone can do a screenshot, but these are some of the same folks who made Red Orchestra for UT2004, so I really believe in this mod..

I'm still in doubt about getting Quake 4, I'll probably buy it, but I'm FAR more excited about ET:Quake Wars..

HAHAHA, sony is so full of shit, not only have they made a trojan that spreads worldwide to protect their copyright, but they BREACH COPYRIGHT in the process..

They actually makes it real easy for M$ to turn into the good guys. MS antispyware even blocks sony spyware now..

It's not like you can't download it off one of the many download sites that still have it available

I know, and that makes this strategy, and the reckless admission of the reasons behind it in the press release even dumber.

At least they're honest about it.

Yeah, brutally honest..

"In order to encouarge impulse buys for the first month"

I'll just make it slightly clearer

"It worked for Ragdoll Kung-Fu, so we really want to milk money from the curious players, who probably wouldnt buy it after trying the demo!"

gg marketing department.

Yeah, the no-demo policy is wierd and kind-of annoying.. also, you'd think they (valve) could even do time-limited trials with steam... like for people who havent played DOD:Source, why dont give a day or 2 trial.. Well, I guess the problem would be multiple free accounts.., but with the kind of control steam has, should be doable..

Ever since i downloaded a CS:S custom map pack from PAF full of complete shit maps, that also screwed up CS:S and replaced the default menu-background with a butt-ugly PAF background, Im having a hard time trusting downloads from them.

Everyone seriously need to check out insurgency though

"..chance to check it out", probably means it'll be released in chunks, like CS:S or DOD:S with few maps at first and then more content added later.. or maybe its episodic

Anyway, its rather silly how they've now already set this short timeframe for this game before its announcement, stick to start using "When its done", valve.

That DOD:S map looks good.

Speaking of greatness, Insurgency just released their first screenshot, and all I can say is: Εfyttihelvete!

EDIT: turns out its not the first shot, but it still kicks so much ass.

Seems like everyone uses this tech for the next-gen stuff. I wonder if id or valve, or anyone else have anything up their sleeve that can beat UE3..

Anyway, I cant wait to see what the Red Orchestra team can do with it..
