former eastern block studios have a completely different way of making games. While much of it comes off as amateurish, they are much less beholden to the bean-counters and tend to go with cool ideas and worry about the logistics later. Obviously this way of making a game is what caused GSC's trouble with getting the game onto the market, but its hard to argue with the results.

I'm sure Bethesda will make a decent product, but I seriously doubt they could ever capture what made the original games special.

The entire point of this thread is too just fuel the rumors and hatred of EA and Battlefield. It was nothing more than a listing error so why keep it open? Why is this even a topic? Oh yea to get more hits to crappy gaming sites that pass it's dribble off as rumors. There is nothing to discuss to be honest. There is no Battlefield 4 for now and the $70 is for the new medal of honor premium.

There was no bigger fan of the Battlefield IP than myself. I played BF3 for 10 minutes and uninstalled it. It was simply an expanded version of the Bad Company games. I liked the Bad Company games but expected far more innovation from the original IP. Evidently "innovation" is now interchangeable with the term "micro-transactions" and "DLC".

Pretty lofty thing to say given there was 0 actual gameplay in this video

theres a shit-ton of gameplay media on youtube. Community guy "TotalBiscuit" recorded several hours worth from the E3 floor, not to mention the officially released sruff.

Lastly, this is the same team that did PS1.....the greatest game ever.

Is Dave "Smokejumper" Georgeson still with them? I thought he had left?

I liked PS1 alot, was in the beta, played for the first few months it was up. Looking forward to this. Free is even better.

I beleive Dave came in at a later date in the games development. I don't beleive he's there now. While I thought he was a great producer, he seems to not be a favorite among other devs who have worked under him and especially the crew at TribalWar.com (they felt he was responsible for "ruining" their beloved IP)

he was responsible for Tribes 2 and Heavy Gear 2, some of the finest games of the late 90's to early 2k's (IMHO)

That's like saying that people should buy a game solely for the multi-player when a single player campaign is provided. I'm sure there are many who bought games like SC2 with this in mind, but I'm not one of them. F2P or not, I still have to buy the game, and I'm not a fan of multiplayer-only games. So I'm not sure there will be much interest for someone like me.

I think you're confusing F2P with non-subscription, like Guild Wars. F2P doesn't cost you anything to play. You don't buy the game, you don't pay a subscription, you just buy stuff from their shop if you want, but it's not required. Perfect system for trying out a game.

Don't bother. You can talk until you die of old age and the anti- F2P people (ITS MEANS PAY-2-WIN MAAAANNNN!) know everything even before a product is launched. Kind of amazing when you think about it.

Jeryk,

You make some valid points but the point I was trying to make is that F-2-P isn't and shouldn't be a major sticking point for most gamers. The model works and its one that will be used more and more as time goes on.

Eh... that's not entirely true. For one, most of the unlockables in T:A are upgrades, not side-grades. More health, more ammo, more damage, more energy, etc. A fully upgraded Soldier will have a significant advantage over a non-upgraded Soldier. Also, some weapons are just plain better than others. The Jackal is inherently better than the Arx Buster, for example.

Most of the "upgrades" are superficial. A bit more ammo, 25% more damage against "armored targets" (vehicles and turrets which are rarely used) etc. Some of it is useful but not unbalanced or unfair. Most of the time I dont even bother with the "upgrades" because they dont impart any very significant. The Jackal is being rebalanced.

You can end up paying far more under the laughable "free to play" model. Why do you think they are all moving in this direction.

Because physical media is dead? Because people don't want to pay for a game and then a monthly fee? Because one can tailor their MP experience in a way that doesn't require endless grinding?

Just stop with this "ITS PAY TO WIN MAAAAANNNN!" bullshit. You can check out a game without spending a penny. Is paying 60 bucks for a retail game only to find out its a piece of shit make more sense to you?

Thats whats called a rhetorical question.

Yeah, a pay to win model is awesome. And in many of the latest f2p games you can spend far more than a single 60 bucks fee AND a monthly 15 dollar fee just in a single month.

Funny, I'm playing Tribes Ascend and quite a few people are using the free classes and are kicking ass while not spending a penny. So far, no one I know has been charged for the download.....or the patches.....or the DLC/new maps.....or the awesome support from Hi-Rez...etc. Further, the stuff i bought has NOT made me any more powerful....it's just allowed me to have more ways in which I can play the game. I still get my ass kicked on a regular basis from the people who don't pay a dime.

They stonewalled state officials when questions started coming up about the late payments etc. This is politicians calling favors to the State Police and AG's office to break 38 studio's balls. Ive lived here my whole life. This is how the state political system works. Much like a Mafia family

I hope there is an investigation against EDC. There is no way 38 Studios burned through that much cash in that short a time.

jim, I don't think 38 Studios was frivolous with the cash, they took a shot and it failed. The problem, to me anyway, is that a few politicos were so willing to sacrifice taxpayer money and god knows what other perks to get a game studio in RI. In the mind of the ringmaster the game industry is somehow "cutting edge" to them and they want to be able to claim credit if it turned out good with high sales.

As it is now, none of these shitbags have claimed responsibility for this debacle

This state is notorious for its politicians which Alan Dershowitz has called "The most corrupt in the country". The State has a checkered past with rumored Mob involvement in municipal projects (a running joke here is you'll never see a public construction project being done by a company that doesnt have a vowel in the owners last name). Appointments to positions and elected officials look at their positions as an opportunity to enrich themselves and friends. For example, "The Providence Place Mall" was pitched as a high end mall with expensive boutique outlets, gourmet dining (Think Copely Place in Boston) etc. Studies showed it would be untenable financially since the number of high income residents who could afford to shop there were'nt enough to support the place. The study results landed on deaf ears, bonds were floated, deals made without public input. It is now allowing in "Dollar Tree" and Trading card shops....ie; anyone who is willing to pay the rent.

38 Studios was a similar deal. A few politicos begged the company to locate here with tax breaks and funding. It was put through with out a single bit of input from taxpayers. Not a single politician is claiming responsibility for the wrongheaded deal to begin with.

This was seen by many of us before the papers were even signed for the Studios to move in. As usual we get to foot the bill for some scumbags who feel the state is their personal Kingdom

1 million downloads. Too bad there isn't more than 100 people playing at peak times.

Hi-Rez has done a remarkable job bringing the game back but I'm starting to suspect that the newer generation of gamers just aren't interested in this kind of game any longer.
