Yeah, it'll be an advantage for those that have it, and it'll be cool. It's like a significantly better version of surround sound headphones. When I played a ton of MW2 on Xbox I'd occasionally see guys repeatedly getting the drop on everyone. If they were talkative, they'd almost always say they had a surround sound headset with the footsteps cranked up so they always knew when someone was nearby. It was a huge advantage.
Few people bothered buying it because it's expensive and it removes you from the world around you.
You could use it like a portable multi-monitor setup. I think having OS windows that you could put anywhere in 3d space could be quite compelling for productivity, given the right input device.

What competitive advantage? Probably none. I'd guess that it'll be worse for competitive gaming than a standard monitor, at least for a product generation or two.
