Even its usage is limited - games where you have a first person view. It makes no sense for most strategy, sports, board, or third person games, and it makes even less for any other computer use.
I've read that one of the most impressive demos on the Rift is a virtual movie theater. You could recreate any screen setup within the Rift.
The biggest problem is that you'll need something like an 8K 500hz screen to effectively emulate a real screen in virtual space.

But what advantage do you get for web surfing, or typing in spreadsheets, or playing Civilization, that makes up for essentially being in an isolation booth?

Yeah, it'll be an advantage for those that have it, and it'll be cool. It's like a significantly better version of surround sound headphones. When I played a ton of MW2 on Xbox I'd occasionally see guys repeatedly getting the drop on everyone. If they were talkative, they'd almost always say they had a surround sound headset with the footsteps cranked up so they always knew when someone was nearby. It was a huge advantage.
Few people bothered buying it because it's expensive and it removes you from the world around you.
