A headset you strap on and isolate yourself from the outside world doesn't seem like a logical next step to me, just like Google Glass doesn't seem like a logical next step.

If we don't move to some form of implant we're moving to holograms. Something like this is just an off-shoot, something fun for a small group of people but nothing the masses will gravitate towards. Even its usage is limited - games where you have a first person view. It makes no sense for most strategy, sports, board, or third person games, and it makes even less for any other computer use.

IMO it is logical as the next step because those with the smarts, the dollars and the plan can see it as feasible and are moving forward with that.

Your suggestions while grand are still too much pie in the sky at this time, this is a step towards that, will have it's era and then on to the next.

I love how you take a jab at "strap on and isolate yourself from the outside world" as some type of dig. Face it today when we have our faces in electronics we are still engrossed in that world, or in your suggestion of a holo-deck that would just be a larger area inside your own little enclosed world. When you are engrossed in anything, it becomes your own little world. Reading, electronics whatever, doesn't matter if it is VR, words on paper or a 3" screen. When you focus on your subject, the other things around it become secondary until they demand attention. I assume I have the ability to take off a headset to answer a door or call.
