I always found them hard to get into, but once I did they were great fun. I think its because there was a lot going on, various quests and things to do, so if I picked the game back up after letting it sit for a bit it took awhile to remember WTF was going on, and what all I needed to do.

I hope the 3rd is more like the 1st one than the 2nd. The 2nd one got hit by a heavy dose of consolfication; more QTEs, combat wasn't as good, and the crafting and inventory system weren't so good.
