4. Re: The Elder Scrolls Online to Use Subscriptions Aug 21, 2013, 09:22 NewMaxx
The problem isn't a subscription model so much as a subscription model with a multi-platform game. The console ecosystem is adjusting pretty well to the whole microtransaction system, and there's XBox Gold, etc. Add in the fact that MMO's require constant, relatively large updates, and I really think a separate subscription on top of all that is asking too much, especially when even a lot of PC players are moving to F2P.

There's a reason Blizzard had to restart Titan, for reasons I posted well before they made that decision on this very site: that they built it for a subscription model and would realize it wouldn't work in the current economy. That they would realize that going multi-platform required working with not one but two different ecosystems (Sony's and Microsoft's) while simultaneously building for PC gamers (whose needs and capabilities are considerably different).

Is their IP and vision enough to carry it despite all of these caveats? Personally I hope so, but what I've seen of the game in its current state is something more along the lines of a better SWToR. Sure, I bought that and played 2-3 months, but I only got interested again after a lot of updates and a F2P model. If they can ensure constant content updates and fixes, sure, but again...applying that to consoles has never met with complete success (yet).
