I dug into the comments and stuff when I RTFA.
Nothing. It wasn't being used when he started the job, so he kept it up to increase the uptime number (complaints about the hdd bearing noise means that he finally shut it down). There's stuff in comments other servers with longer uptime actually being used for things. Like a 386 being used to monitor an alarm phone line.
BTW 5.25" full height drives were something like 20 megs.
Also in the comments was this great link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQ5MA685ApE (make sure you turn on CC with english). They had a 6 year uptime and didn't want to lose uptime OR availability of the webserver. So they hard hacked the redundant power supply, added a 3g card to maintain online availability of the web server, and took it on public transportation to move it about 4 miles.
