Exactly. He's charming and witty and funny - and yes, we all enjoy him - but that hardly qualifies as best (supporting) actor role.
That's absolute horse shit. Hans Landa was one of the best characters to grace cinema in years. The opening to Basterds was just absolutely perfect in every respect.
Was his turn as Doctor Shultz a major departure? No. Doesn't mean his performance wasn't just as solid. Not every actor needs to try and hit virtually every spot on the spectrum like Day-Lewis does. Christ, Denzel Washington is always getting love and he only ever plays himself.
