It's the logical progression. The only issue here is timing. Microsoft is moving too fast (perhaps spooked by Apple's success with its closed software market)... but every move so far is perfectly logical, so long as you see software as a "service" and not a "product." That's what many have been warning about here on BN for a while. Sometimes the slippery slope fallacy isn't a fallacy...
