I'm 99% sure this is bullshit, but will wait to see the full interview. The threat to the PC only came after m$ bribed, bulled and beat PC developers into submission. Not only did it threaten the PC but the quality of games and software development as a whole. It brought on the institutionalization of development with almost slave like conditions for developers, low quality shovelware and retail release in beta state or worst.

Yes, Microsofts venture into the console gaming market was strictly based on the fact that they saw it as a really big (and growing) market to try and take over. They had zero intentions of ever playing WITH Sony, they saw Sony had this huge pie and they wanted it. I was at CES in 2001 and all the talk was about Microsoft wanting to dominate the living room.
