Now if consumers are so turned off by this that they refuse to buy a console doing this, that would cause fewer games to be developed.

That was the whole premise though People buy less games overall, only getting their favorites or guaranteed hits which in turn causes less titles to be developed and even more revenue/product concentration.

If they do go this route I can't see MS/Sony wanting to piss off both the consumer AND gamestop, it would be suicidal. They will likely sell activation codes or passes for each title so that second hand sellers/buyers still have options and so they can avoid lawsuits in the EU/etc.

If Microsoft wants to basically make the Xbox into Steam then they also need to do what Steam does and have frequent sales and better prices overall. They also need Gamestop or they are fucked.

PC gaming has already been doing this for years now. Pretty much every new PC game requires you to activate it through some online service (battlenet, steam, origin), locking that copy to you and making it have no resell value. So if this is the death knell of console gaming and there is no alternative then where are people going to migrate to for their gaming fix?

It's a large entertainment market these days, games compete for attention with streaming video, ebooks, mobiles, portables, etc. It might not be PC gaming but people will find entertainment if they want it. Many of those platforms have gaming markets. Plus there's always Nintendo. But hey who knows, with Valve putting out a Steam Box it might be PC gaming after all (although it has the same resale issues, at least the prices would be better)
