I suspect it's really a decision made based on their online business model; either because their servers can't handle tons of big cities, or they don't want for cities to be independent and self-sufficient. Are they limited that drastically? They're the same size as SC4's medium cities, although by the looks of it things like curved roads mean the space isn't typically used as efficiently. Sepharo pointed out that along with always-on, the concerns are city size and performance, which are contradicting issues.
By limiting the city size, and by making cities dependant (to some extent, TBC), this means people will be making many more cities. Wouldn't this hit the servers as badly as fewer huge self-sufficient cities?
Maxis' priorities appear to be in this order: graphics, simulation, size. Mine would be simulation, size, graphics. However, graphics sell games and I can (begrudgingly) understand their choice. For all we believe that gameplay is more important than graphics, we (not everyone but I include myself) are quick to criticise a fugly game. |
