But what you're mentioning isn't, if the hardware is basically compatible with the PC. Some XBLA games can be played on Windows 8. Mostly crap, but a start. I'm of the belief that, while probably not at launch, Microsoft does plan to merge the Xbox and the PC. So yeah, that would make backwards compatibility alright. At that point, though, there would be no future Xbox, just an environment on the PC. Perhaps one you need to pay for. Uncertain how they'd do it, but they'd be wise to totally free it up...
