It just so happened that if they built it, they expected that you'd try to use it and gave you a little script to go with it.
Just cause the developers covered all the bases, doesn't necessarily mean there's less freedom to the game.
People often make the comparison to Thief, but I mean jesus, that game wasn't an open field either. You still had to take specific routes to get where you had to be.

In some places, but overall the idea was to be stealthy in Thief, and not just for "achievements". Look, we said it's a good game, just not Thief/Deus Ex good and that, as they say, is that.
