Half-Life also had great AI for its time but things move on. Plus you can't simply take the AI from a corridor shooter and apply it to an open world game like FC3. Even if you're talking about corridor shooters, Metro 2033 had better AI than FEAR. Nah it's not nostalgia, Fear just genuinely has good AI, go play it. They flank, work together and etc. Pretty much what you want in an FPS game that few others manage to pull off even today. Other parts of the game suffer from nostalgia goggles but it had really strong AI, not to mention pioneered several commonly used shadowing techniques. People just tend to savescum the shit out of a lower difficulty and gloss over it. I was disappointed to learn that Half-Life was just scripted really well, it wasn't really any advanced AI.
Some otherwise very positive reviewers have noted lackluster AI in this which is disappointing since it sounds like it would have been icing on the cake. Just Cause 2 had similar issues, although its world doesn't sound as well crafted as FC3.
