If they did it the other way, they'd have to either swap textures out on the fly (which is going to look bad no matter what), or they'd need actually fire-destructable terrain, which would eat so many resources the game would run like a dog.

I think, sadly, that this currently is about what we can expect to see in games that use fire like Far Cry does.


The way the fire burns the grass is actually really realistic. You shouldn't expect raging fires in a freaking tropical jungle island.

This summer, in Ireland, we had a campfire at night. The fire burned like mad in a BBQ that rested on the grass. After an hour the BBQ metal got hot enough to ignite the grass. The grass burned outward in a beautiful circle but didn't manage to spread further than less than half a meter.

Grass and plants, especially on a freaking tropical jungle island, hold so much moist that the entire burning feature in Far Cry 3 is almost a sort of unnecessary, overkill technology.
