He doesn't need to raise an infinite amount of money, he only needs enough to make the game. Not only that a limited amount of money forces him to manage the scope of the project. Plus he has a private investor willing willing to toss in an extra 10 million or so. He has more then enough to make a complete game.
His original goal was 2 million lets not forget. He wasn't expecting to get 6.5/7 million. The project was scoped for a certain budget already.
At this point he's got enough to make a full game and they are planning on selling it retail after release so it's not like they need the money. The bulk of the game has essentially been paid for, now they have to struggle to actually build the thing.
Not only that they have recurring donations for people who want to fund the game throughout if you look at the tiers ($10/month). So if you want to fund the game on a regular basis just choose the monthly option until release.
