Actually, yes there was. The idea that WWI was a trench warfare is only partly right. WWI began as a very fluid war pretty much like all of WWII and at the later stages of WWI that fluidity happened again.

In fact the trench warfare was rather fluid in the attacks and counterattacks and counter-counterattacks.

I recommend reading this book, it is one of the most fascinating books about a very gruesome, terrible war.
