They're pulling from the Appendices and Silmarillion as well. There's plenty of material there. Some of those stories could be movies in themselves.

They are not pulling from the Silmarillion. Christopher Tolikien owns the rights to that, and he has no desire to sell them. All the material is coming from The Hobbit and the LotR appendixes.

Frankly, I think the more of Peter Jackson's vision of Middle Earth I can watch, the happier I will be.
