This is what baffles me about those kind of digital honey-pot operations by police. So a clear cut would-be pervert is making contact yet no crime actually happens to be committed. How is that "catching" anyone. The real perverts are not stupid enough to use craigslist. Most states have a law that specifically states that if you use a computer to solicit sex from a minor, it's a felony. So in that case, just talking to a minor online (and you only have to be convinced that it's a minor you're talking to, it doesn't actually HAVE to be a minor) and asking for sex has already basically landed your ass in jail. They just still have to catch you at that point, which is why they run the sting operations.
And you'd be surprised how many "real perverts" get busted this way. Most of them are really dumb and, as the article so excellently states, already have very low inhibitions for themselves, so you dangle them a cookie that's too good to be true, and they often fall for it.
Then there's the teams that bust open massively protected sites that are invitation only, work on a daily password rotation, etc. Ars does excellent reporting on how often they nail these fuckers.
