Actually doing good isometric art in 2D is vastly more expensive than just doing it straight in 3D nowadays.

There is an start-up cost involved (A good map maker tool) but once you have that, 3D offers much faster and easier work-flow than 2d sprites. Not to mention you can easily re-use and merge art assets, which you can not with 2d sprites.

Also.. light, shadow, occlusion, collision does not need to be specified with painstaking hand detailing, because the 3d mesh already does that for you.

So if they do 2D art, they would be wasting that money pretty well.
