Indeed. The current ending is total postmodernism and about as hollywood as they come these days. Besides, the artistic value of a product shouldn't be a tickbox you check off "Nonstandard Ending X". A good ending is in the quality of the telling and the extent to which it concludes the work. Whether that's a pyrrhic victory or ambiguous is a whole other matter and not really why people are upset. Videogames allow for entirely new methods of storytelling and that's what people thought they were getting with this series right up until the very end.
