You just sign in with your Amazon account dude, it's not a separate account if you're worried about a long signup thingie.
Due to the rather unique nature of Kickstarter I can only assume they were only able to get a decent merchant contract with Amazon. I know Paypal is a total piece of shit company to deal with and other payment processors would likely balk at so many long holds being processed.
