I don't buy an iPad because the first thing I'd want to do is make it more like a laptop and hook a keyboard to it, preferring actual keyboards to virtual keyboards. I may as well get a laptop.
An iPad is actually too big to be a mobile device that I would want, while a smartphone is just too small. I'm a 7" tablet kind of guy, and my Kindle Fire, while not as full featured as a full-sized tablet, is all I want or need. It's exactly the right size to be "mobile" it fits nicely in my uniform pocket at work. That it's less than half the price of the cheapest iPad is a nice bonus too.
