There are profit sharing companies that essentially do something similar. The employees often own stock thats not available to the public and share in profits if they make some. Often they get shares along with their paycheck, so the employees are more invested in wanting and trying to have their company succeed.

But yes, he didn't have to do that and its incredibly generous.

Yeah it's both generous and good business. Good for morale, good PR, good way to motivate new talent to want to work for him, etc etc.. This is good business. It's very capitalistic and anti-socialist to reward employees for good company performance.
