If you're making a million dollars a year and potentially fucking over hundreds of other people through incompetence and/or greed then sure, there should be consequences for your actions. With the big money should come responsibility and consequences.

And this is why CEOs make so much (too much, too many golden parachutes, but they still deserve to make a lot.) The entire company is on their shoulders and if things should fail, for any reason, they're the ones that are supposed to jump on the sword.

But, for some reason, that responsibility is often gone. Why pay them so much if there's so much less risk in their jobs? Yeah, they still have a great deal of other responsibilities, but no longer the risk. Even in companies where there is risk there are huge parachutes that damn near reward the risk.
