This is the case for some steam games too. You can launch them without steam launched first. It just depends on how much integration they have with steam, if they bothered to integrate steam's ticket authentication system, or are using it purely as a distribution platform.

The cases of games running without Steam tend to be bugs. Skyrim, for example, ran without Steam initially but that was fixed in a patch. Portal 2 can be run without Steam, but you have to launch it via a .map file directly. I don't think there are any intentional cases of Steam games running without Steam.

As for Origin, it's true that it doesn't its own proprietary DRM scheme, so games use the same DRM that retail copies use. On the other hand, some people prefer this, as it allows more flexibility. You can install the game wherever you want and don't have to run a third-party client while running the game.

I still prefer Steam due to the numerous benefits it offers but I do wish it were more flexible in how you install and run your games.
