22. Re: BRINK Free Weekend Dec 2, 2011, 13:34 Carcifier

I've played every major FPS that's probably ever existed. I liked ETQW. I did not get Brink because I hated the art work/style aspect of it and it didn't seem to have anything really new it was offering. You can argue it did, but it wasn't enough to get me to buy it.

I tried it last night and I'm surprised how much I dislike it. I was expecting to at least think it's OK, since I've liked Splash Damage's previous attempts. But so far, I hate it.

The interface is atrocious. From the opening menu it's awful. It's confusing. How the fuck can you confuse me, I've played every FPS ever???? It's ugly. It's cumbersome. There's nothing that indicates what the changes you're making to your character are accomplishing. Some things are grayed out with a paddlelock. OK, guess I have to unlock that, fine. I can't tell easily what I'm acquiring by playing the game and what is required to buy things in the game. Some "level" stuff I seem to get. I get exp, I guess that's only for leveling. I get access to new "looks".

I don't care enough about the game to figure it out. And the reason I don't care is one, the presentation of the interface and two, the horrible game-play. Is this online only? I don't know. I have three game-modes. I pick what would normally be a "single-player story" game. I end up connecting to a server and playing with bots! And the bots are awful! Horrible. It's not fun, shooting mindless bots. They don't move out of the way. They just let you blast them to all hell. Worse, that takes time with the weak weapons.

This is a class based game, with apparently 4 classes but I can't tell you which class I'm using when I play. I can't tell you what different abilities I have. As far as I can tell, I've been a soldier mostly and the big ability I have is throwing a molotov cocktail. FUN! It wasn't obvious switching to other classes. I switched to engineer and the only thing I could find to do was put down a landmine. And only ONE mine! FUN!

I get 2 weapons. I can make them run out of ammo real quick. Occasionally a bot throws you ammo. I'm not even sure if taking enemy weapons resupplies ammo.

This game is a train wreck. The missions of "escorting a NPC" are boring as all hell and seemingly impossible to fail at. The NPC gets blasted to all hell, usually walks first out in to gunfire and it doesn't matter if you die. He'll keep on going. There's a clock, but I know not why.

The only positive thing I can say about this game is how it looks. I'm surprised how good it is graphically, considering it's older tech.

I'm disappointed Splash Damage. I was hoping for an improvement in game-play over ETQW which was rather solid.
