Mostly it's a utilization issue. Either there isn't enough processing power, or there isn't enough bandwidth between servers to handle all of the requests to auth a user, or large groups of users.

Data security for all things, is well I'd say archaic. And it probably won't change until processing power, and bandwidth exceeds server requirements, and it's cheap at that.
