I still don't understand why EVERYONE used that Aug. I NEVER used it. Energy was far more limited in Deus Ex than health. If I got hurt, I just used medkits.

I don't remember energy being very limited, either. I only recall using it much for health. Which yes, was plentiful, especially close to end-game, but I used medkits only for in-battle.

I think energy was stupid in HR, though. I pretty much never had more than one bar, and never invested in more bars (well, one, but I regretted it.) As a result I only had energy for one take-down at once, which felt less like resource management and more like a frustrating, nonsensical restriction. The only things I used energy for was tearing down walls and knocking people out.
It was true to the original, but it detracted from the game. While I understand its need to see-through walls, I don't understand it for much else, including the ability to walk quietly. Better to have just made those passive rather than active and get rid of energy.
