Bulletstorm's multiplayer surprised me for two reasons:
1) It wasn't hard to get in a game with good teamwork. It was the type of game that demanded voice communication to work best, and I never use it. Ever. Never heard anyone else do it, either. But in order to go forward you needed to really be in synch on combos. I was shocked at how regularly I found groups of 4 where at least 3 or us were very much in synch despite not communicating at all. We just paid attention to each other. That was satisfying.
2) The multiplayer didn't suck. That was the biggest surprise. I expected it to suck. I expected Echoes to be fun. I was wrong. Echoes didn't amuse me at all. Multiplayer did. This isn't to say it was good, just satisfying relative to expectations. In part this is because the game left me wanting more - the leash and kick mechanic was too much fun to give up on. And it was because my expectations were so damn low.
I put a lot of hours into multiplayer, but that was often because I'd get into a game with a person or three that I synched really well with and it felt like quitting partly through would be a waste. But the whole rounds thing stopped me. It was better than some games (my few rounds of CoD Zombies stands out) in that the first rounds weren't painfully slow. In fact, the only true difference between initial and later rounds is score required. But starting over, with no upgrades, was always frustrating. Even when that mechanic isn't truly punishing (again, CoD Zombies - the first 10 minutes were so tedious and dull) it still makes me feel like starting is a giant commitment that I may not be ready for. I burn out much quicker. Much.
Again, not here saying "oh man, multiplayer was great" just saying "oh man, I had far more fun than expected, but I expected junk." |
