For the vast majority of end users, even gamers, an onboard sound card is plenty. You really have to have some good quality speakers and headphones to even tell the difference. Unless of course you happen to have some kind of noise hissing and popping issues, but those can and do occur on addon soundcards as well as onboard soundcards.
