And yeah, I remember saying they were already past the 150 million mark several years back. So with costs till they actually launch, another 100 mil on marketing and on-going maitenance and development costs they could easily hit half a billion. So unless they end up putting up WoW like numbers for at least 5 years they're FUBAR. And even sight unseen the general consensus I've been getting from people from all over for the last few years is one of general meh-ness about the game. So yeah, unless they're deliver something that's the next best thing to sliced bread they're screwed. Problem is now they've spent so much and gone beyond the event horizon they're going to have to push it out the door sooner than later or watch everything get sucked into the black hole money pit entirely. Problem is this black hole will get bigger. Imagine the marketing budget EA will pour into this, it'll be insane. Now I don't care for MMORPGs, from a developer point of view it is a very crowded market and you have to be either different or good, preferably both, to succeed in this market. However RPS's preview today spells a very bad game in the making, and it's a preview, I don't think I've ever seen a preview actually not paint a game in a good light until now.
This is a big, big gamble for EA with a huge risk. If they pull it EA will easily surpass Activision in a medium-term period of time as the top publisher out there since the cashflow going into EA will be mind boggling. However if this game fails I actually believe EA may find itself either close or in bankrupcy. $300M+ investment does take a long, long time to see any ROI in the MMORPG market, and that's counting the game is excellent and attracting thousands of players per week.
EA is gambling a lot on this and I honestly believe this game will either give a great financial health for EA for years to come or it will break them completely. |
