There's nothing special about WoW beyond it's adoption by the drooling masses who don't actually play games. If you compare WoW's quality to other non-MMO games, yes it seems lacking. However, if you only compare it to MMOs you will realize before WoW every other MMO have extreme levels of grind and were very punishing. WoW focused on the reward schedule and a faster, but still addictive leveling system while leveraging their company name, which they built up over time. WoW cut a lot of bullshit out of MMOs (yes there still is a lot of bullshit.)
As a genre most MMOs tend to be very bad games. WoW, mediocre as it is, is still the best in its genre. There is a reason a vast majority of WoW players end up returning to WoW. |
