Considering a single good video card can cost as much or more as an entire console it's no surprise.

Let alone all the other components people swap out on a regular basis.

What? What kind of shit is this? Good god, the myth that PC gamers keep upgrading their hardware each week has got to stop. Hardware for the PC is no longer as expensive as it was and it lasts a long time now, seeing that most PC games are ports that don't require a lot of power to run.

Yeah, nowadays you can setup a decent gaming rig for $500 or less. One that has better graphics than consoles. The thing is, the consoles all have years old graphics hardware, and so the PC has kinda hit a plateau in terms of pushing graphics because of all the ports. So yeah, an 8800 gtx can still run most stuff decent if its not 1080p.

ati 4870 has been going on sale under $100.
Throw in a 1.5 TB hdd for under $70 (there's been multiple sales at under that price point in last couple weeks without rebates).
A core i3 cpu for around $100.
A 1156 mobo for same around $80 or so depending on features desired.
Memory is a little expensive right now, so throw in 2gb now for about $40 and buy 2gb later

Its under $400 and all the major parts of the system are there. A decent case and PSU to power it will probably take the rest. Use any old monitor or use that HD TV, or the LCD you already own, etc.
