Motor racing is a non-contact sport with by far the most protective equipment yet when injuries do happen they trump everything else. Comparisons between sports do not really work because different forces come into play, for example consider http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG8-gi8DIn0 (that wasn't even a foul).
The rolling around on the ground thing is a major nuisance, though it's mainly endemic to Mediterranean European teams, most specifically Italy are famous for it. Watch some of the British leagues and much more physical contact is accepted as part of the game. They don't want to be promoting that kind of play in the World Cup though as it's a bad influence for kids or whatever (plus no doubt club managers would be even more reluctant to release players due to fear of injuries to the multi-million dollar investments). |
