Most current games are 10GB+ in size. Either you live at least several hours away from any retailer, or you have the world's fastest Internet connection and a reserved pipeline to Steam. Neither of those is true for most people.

Well there's quite a bit more involved to go to a store than just the trip itself. Like getting dressed for instance or finding the game, walking through the store, waiting in line.

Yes there are games bigger than 10GB but not all of them, many are still under 10GB. 10GB takes about 1.5 hours at 2MB/s. That's faster and considerably more convenient than going to the store for me.
