13. Re: Blizzard Appealing Korean StarCraft 2 Rating Apr 22, 2010, 23:42 D_K_night

The original starcraft had this feature out of box. Sure back in those days home LANs weren't commonplace, but starcraft LAN parties were a blast.

Remember the days when slashdot boycotted Warcraft 3 over no LAN functionality(why should we play on your laggy Battle.net Blizzard, hand over your authentication keys and open it to the public)? It's happening here again, only on a much larger scale. IMO, I didn't like the way slashdot all but put a gun to Blizzard's head(and tried to justify themselves, stating that the game will be pirated anyways - sorry fellas, that's not how things work)

The reasons for Battle.net login are obvious - to help stem piracy of the game. It's not going to stop ppl from pirating for the single player campaign mode(there are always cracks). And at the same time, opening up LAN-based play also opens up the game towards piracy as well...no need for Battle.net sign-in? It's an open pass to download the cracked version.

I don't have the answers. My guess is:

1) Blizzard opens up LAN play and the game is delayed accordingly to enable that feature
2) Blizzard sticks to its guns and loses out all that's associated with KeSPA, possibly with the side-effect of the Koreans vilifying Blizzard publicly and shutting down all traces of Starcraft culture in Korea.

It all comes down to...how important is Korea to Blizzard? Should any country have that much power on a video game developer? Will the game survive sans Korea?
