The content that the 360 can show to players must be present on the disc or on the HD, but the 360 doesn't let you download DLC if you didn't buy it. So if they want all players, even those who didn't buy the DLC to see those assets like graphics and sound, they'll need to put them on the disc. (I think they can also issue a title update, but as anyone who's gotten a little close to 360 development goes, it's not worth releasing a title update for this if the assets are finished before the game's release - just put it on the disc.)
Then I imagine they also brought that system over to the PC to make it easy on themselves. So how come I can download, say, Boarderlands DLC and play the game with someone who doesn't have that DLC? I can't go to the DLC obviously with my friend, but everything else works just fine. I promise my friend hasn't downloaded 3 gigs of data just so he can play with me. |
