Actually, they patched it to include multiplayer, not that many people actually used it. At the time shipping a game without multiplayer, even if the style of the game didn't lend itself to it, would invoke all kinds of nerd rage so they bowed to the pressure and patched it in. It would be kind of like releasing a game today without dedicated server support or releasing one last year with harsh DRM.
