Firstly, to directly compare UT3 to UT2004, regards player speed: The reason UT2004 is overwhelmingly preferred to UT3 today and yesterday, is the sense of player speed. Either on foot on in a vehicle.

Running in UT2004 actually felt slower than in UT or UT3, due to their stupid design decision to add those double jumps, boost dodges and whatnot too late in development. Levels had to be much bigger to facilitate that movement (well, they actually made the player models smaller), which made you feel tiny.
