^^

completely agree with you. character dev is what the first ones were all about. and another note about nostalgia...i think that is exactly what is keeping people from panning the new movies, not the other way around. i wouldn't mind the hamlet speeches so much if they weren't so one sided. at least hamlet was confused, these character seem to have have perfectly fated lives. man it makes it boring.

some things about the original characters that were great.

chewie - think about how loyal he was to han, how a character that said nothing pulled that off. the scene in empire where han tells him he has to watch over leia is amazing. there is no one near as good a supporting character in the new ones. Hell lando was even cool as this turncoat who becomes a general.

luke - as opposed to anakin hes a blumbering idiot in the beginning. the great part about the luke character was how he changed from this farmboy who got his ass kicked in mos eisley and didnt even want to fight to this jedi wearing all black and taking on an emporer. anakin on the other hand is somehow a badass as a little kid. no growth. his fall isn't tragic to me, all you can say is that he can't love because he's a jedi, it's just not believable. don't use plot to force emotion, use emotion to force plot. all he does is whine. his revenge against the sandpeople is meaningless because we don't care about his mother, she had no value to the audience because she never did anything.

han - easily the best star wars character of all time. a complete cynic. everytime you question the cornyness of the movies hes there asking the same question and therefor reversing your beliefs. as mentioned the i love you, i know lines to me is one of the greatest in cimena. theres actual tension between him and leia, they never SAID anything about love, they just fought all the time and disguised it. unlike padame and anakin who just TALK about how much they love each other all the time.

c3po and r2 - is it me or do these characters have no heart in the new movies? in the old ones they were there as witnesses to the story, caught up in the stuggle and giving us the play by play in a humorous fashion throughout. in the new trilogy they are more physical props than anything (ep2 droid constuction scene for example).

darth vadar - evil, period. who is your evil char in the new trilogy? darth mall looked scary no doubt, but what did he do other than get in fights? darth vadar was so evil his own commanders feared him. senator palpatine isn't scary at all, he just talks about what he's going to do to everyone and basically acts the general as he walks down a hall with the henchman of the day. that's not scary, its just boring. also darth becomes this redeaming character at the end, no matter how evil a man is, he can be turned, all it took was the love of a son. how great is that? show me anything that moving in the new trilogy. love just feels absent. when luke fights because darth finds out about leia being his sister im there with him, seeing a REASON to turn bad, a reason to fight.

I could go on and on with the rest of them, but i'd really like to hear from some people who enjoyed the new movies to tell me what about the characters that they like. I'm really into this type of stuff in film and would like to hear some other sides. Who knows i may be missing something. I just don't see much depth to the new characters.

i think the best point you made was how you felt at any point that any one of the characters in the original movies could bail out of the alliance. everyone in the new movies is too determed and focused. a large part of this i think is the fact that the majority of the cast is now jedi. it'd be like making a star trek movie with all vulcans. you just don't get any feeling out of the characters.
