The MAJORITY of people out there (friends and family included) are making poor decisions....you can't tell me that isn't the case in THE MAJORITY of these cases. Yep people make bad decisions all day every day. Doesn't mean people should roll over and be complacent to rising fuel prices, which really is what you suggested by showing a spreadsheet to your co-workers to show them "it's not that bad". If people say nothing now, next year the price goes up another 50%, and the year after, and the year after. 5 years goes by and what are we paying for fuel? Most people can't afford to go buy an over-priced Hybrid car, or shorten their commute to work...because prices keep going up, preventing them from putting the money together to make that sort of change.
Government and related industries are taking their sweet-ass time transitioning to alternate fuel sources because they don't want us to change, no matter how low so called oil reserves get.
In the end it's really not about people being able to afford the increase, it's about not wanting to afford the increase. Why should we have to keep handing our money over to the governments for more taxes, or to the fuel companies that blame increase on price per oil drum one month, when the price per barrel goes down, they use the excuse of supply & demand.
I'm sorry but a 50% increase in gas prices in just over a year...is not something to sit back and be complacent about.
